Dunkin's GF donut disappears; try homemade instead

Dunkin’s GF donut disappears; try homemade instead

Big news quietly surfaced recently regarding the much anticipated gluten-free donut from Dunkin’ Donuts.

Well, more accurately, bad news surfaced.

For those who suffer from celiac disease, are gluten sensitive or choose to eat gluten free and have been waiting for the coffee chain to release their much anticipated Cinnamon Sugar Donut, you’ll be waiting a while.

Dunkin’ Donuts issued a statement to Gluten-Free Living explaining, “In 2013, we tested a gluten-free Cinnamon Sugar Donut and Blueberry Muffin in select markets. We are currently assessing the results of this test, as well as feedback from our guests and franchisees, and we do not have plans to launch these products nationally at this time. We are continuing to develop additional gluten-free products for future tests, and we remain committed to exploring ways to offer our guests gluten-free choices.”

Dunkin’ Donuts announced the two gluten-free items in July 2013 and both products would be certified by Gluten Free Certification Organization and prepared in a separate facility to avoid risk of cross contamination. Never billed as a low calorie treat, the gluten-free donut and muffin were hyped as a welcome treat and easily accessible with Dunkin’ Donut’s 7,000 restaurants in 36 states.

Perhaps Dunkin’ Donuts was cautious after what happened to Starbucks: The Seattle-based coffee chain released a gluten-free Valencia orange-flavored cake in 2011 that only lasted two months before it was pulled from the menu due to negative feedback.

So instead of disappointment, let us offer you a tasty, homemade (better than bought) pick me up. Just in case you didn’t get enough chocolate from your valentine a week ago, here is an excellent recipe from Gluten Free Gus for Gluten Free Chocolate Doughnuts.

Author of Gluten Free Gus Pam Wellin, “Now that I have recipes for easily and successfully baking delicious warm-from-the-oven doughnuts at home I can’t imagine ever going to a DD again.”

Wellin does have some authority in this department: she is a successful commercial baker who uses her blog to “demystify gluten-free cooking…and offer expert advice.”

So with the weekend upon us, with a little more time to prepare breakfast, why not swap out the old standards for this treat. Please let us know what you think and as always feel free to share your own favorite sweet gluten-free breakfast treat with the GFT team and community.

We never thought that dunkin doughnuts could control
Cross contamination at the store level. Kudos for the dedicated facility. But real world, there is no way at the stores that this will work.
