Leave the gluten, take the chance on Don

Leave the gluten, take the chance on Don

What is it about today you ask? Sure it’s Friday and we’re all looking forward to a two-day respite but also because on Kickstarter (the site where you can fund creative, independent projects) today’s project of the day is “The Curse of Don Scarducci, a short film” and this is a big deal.

Well it’s a big deal for a few reasons.

Yes, it’s fantastic that out of the 137,158 projects currently attempting to be funded on Kickstarter “The Curse of Don Scarducci, a short film” is featured prominently, near the top of the page.

It’s also a big deal because this isn’t just another mobster film: it tells the tale of Don Scarducci, the toughest gangster who discovers his gluten intolerance. The audiece is teased and wonders, what will Don do with his diagnosis? The project describes Don’s struggle as, “one day of giving up wheat is doable. Stopping forever will change a man in ways you can’t imagine.”

Director Chris Fondulas worked as a boom operator on NBC’s 30 Rock and has transitioned into an award-winning screenwriter.

Inspiration for the film came from the Fondulas’s wife, Jessie, who was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2006.

Fondulas hopes to create a comedy that also brings awareness to celiac disease, described by the project as “this diabolical, one-sided, irksome disease.”

The best part about Kickstarter, besides seeing a creative idea come to fruition, is the rewards you receive for donating. Fondulas has denoted different levels of support with mobster lingo: you could be a crony, an underboss or the don for the right price. Donation perks range from a copy of the film, to apparel and posters to a flight to New York complete with a special dinner.

The project has raised $10,773 so far from 113 donors. That’s 71% of the $15,000 goal. With Kickstarter it’s all or nothing: the project must reach 100% of its goal within the allotted time or not a single cent raised is passed on.

There are 9 days to go. We at Gluten Free Therapeutics have donated. If you feel strongly and are able, do so. We are excited to bring awareness (and some laughter) to a cause so near and dear to us.

As a follow up to this blog we are happy to announce that the film has reached it’s kickstarter goal and will go forward. GFT is please to have been on of the 196 backers for this project. We are very happy for Chris and his crew. We are looking forward to seeing the final film.
Sharing the message about life with celiac disease is important and we feel Chris is doing a great job of using humor to help spread the word.
